Enrollment is now open for MMU’s summer session: Join Hollywood Theatre Community Programmer Anthony Hudson for a seminar on Luca Guadagnino’s 2018 remake of SUSPIRIA! BUY TICKETS NOW!
Your ticket provides access to a pre-recorded lecture and a spot in our virtual discussion on Thursday, June 18 at 7:30pm. Please note that you will need to find and watch the film on your own.
In remaking Daria Nicolodi and Dario Argento's 1977 masterpiece, Guadagnino (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, I AM LOVE) retains the core plot of witches in a dance school but swaps out the Goblin score and iconic saturated colors of the original for two rich, unexplored elements: dance as an artform, and the film’s setting during the tumultuous German Autumn of 1977. Starring Tilda Swinton (in three roles!), Dakota Johnson, and a formidable coven of legendary European actresses, SUSPIRIA is both a loving, wildly queer homage to its source material and a powerful political statement in its own right.
Anthony will discuss Guadagnino’s influences and inspirations, the film’s mythology and relationship to the original, and its commentary on the dangers of fascism and nationalism, the collective trauma of war, and the transformative power of art in a live seminar on Thursday, June 18 at 7:30pm.
